2025 Session Last amended: 2025 session

§ 204C.05 — State Elections; Hours for Voting

Plain-Language Summary

Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for state primaries and general elections. Small towns (under 500 people, outside the metro area) may start voting as late as 10:00 a.m. if approved by town voters. Anyone in line at the polling place by 8:00 p.m. must be allowed to vote. If a polling place is moved on election day, hours may be extended by one hour.

Practical Notes
If you are in line at your polling place when the polls close at 8:00 p.m., you have the right to vote. Do not leave the line. The election judges must let everyone in line at closing time cast their ballot.
