§ 253D.14 — Victim Notification of Petition and Release; Right to Submit Statement

Plain-Language Summary

This section gives victims of sex offenders the right to be notified when a commitment petition is filed and when the committed person may be released or discharged. Victims must register a written request with the facility to receive ongoing notices. The facility must make reasonable efforts to notify registered victims at least 14 days before any hearing on possible release, and victims have the right to submit written statements about proposed releases.

Practical Notes
Victims who want to be notified about commitment proceedings or release decisions must proactively register with the facility. This is not automatic. Victims who do not submit a written request may not receive notice. The right to submit a statement is in addition to any other victim rights under Minnesota law, but it does not give victims formal party status in the commitment proceedings.
