§ 256B.0913 — Alternative Care Program

Plain-Language Summary

Creates the Alternative Care program, which pays for home and community-based services for people age 65 and older who need nursing home-level care but want to stay in their own homes. Available to people who would become eligible for Medical Assistance within 135 days of entering a nursing facility.

Practical Notes
The Alternative Care program helps elderly Minnesotans avoid nursing home placement by funding services like homemaker help, home health aides, adult day care, personal care, and respite care for family caregivers. You must be 65 or older and need nursing facility-level care. Income limits are slightly above Medical Assistance limits. To access this program, start by requesting a long-term care consultation through your county human services office. The consultation is free and will assess your needs and help you understand your options.
