§ 259.41 — Adoption Study

Plain-Language Summary

Requires a completed adoption study, background study, and written report before a child can be placed in a prospective adoptive home. The study must include a home visit, health assessment, parenting skills evaluation, and criminal background check.

Practical Notes
Before you can adopt a child in Minnesota, a licensed agency must conduct a thorough home study that includes at least one in-home visit, a background check, and assessments of your health, parenting skills, finances, and understanding of adoption issues. Stepparent and relative adoptions have simplified requirements. Foster parents may use their existing licensing records to satisfy overlapping requirements.
