§ 260C.317 — Termination of Parental Rights; Effect

Plain-Language Summary

When a court terminates parental rights, the parent loses all legal rights to custody, visitation, and decision-making for the child. The parent also loses the right to appear in future legal proceedings about the child. However, the parent still owes any unpaid child support, and the child keeps all rights to benefits from other sources.

Practical Notes
Even after termination, a parent may still enter into a voluntary communication or contact agreement. The court reviews progress toward adoption every 90 days after termination.
