§ 268B.11 — Self-employed and Independent Contractor Election of Coverage

Plain-Language Summary

This section lets self-employed people and independent contractors choose to join the paid leave program. They must sign up for at least two years (104 weeks) and pay premiums based on their self-employment income. Once approved, they get the same benefits as employees.

Practical Notes
If you are self-employed, you can opt in to the program and receive benefits when you need family or medical leave. You must commit for at least two years and keep your premiums current. If you fall behind on premiums, the commissioner can cancel your coverage, but you still owe premiums for the rest of the 104-week period.
