§ 274.13 — County Board of Appeal and Equalization

Plain-Language Summary

The county board of appeal and equalization is made up of county commissioners and the county auditor, and it reviews property tax assessments across the whole county each year. The board can raise or lower values and change property classifications to match market value, but it cannot grant tax exemptions or remove property from the tax rolls. If you miss your local board meeting without a good reason, you generally cannot appeal to the county board.

Practical Notes
The county board is your second chance to challenge a property assessment if the local board did not resolve your issue. Board members must recuse themselves if the property belongs to a family member or business partner. A special board of equalization can be appointed to handle these duties if the county chooses.
