§ 340A.503 — Persons Under 21; Illegal Acts

Plain-Language Summary

Comprehensive statute governing minors and alcohol in Minnesota. Makes it illegal for persons under 21 to consume, purchase, or possess alcohol (with a limited parental-household exception). Also prohibits selling or furnishing alcohol to minors, misrepresenting age, and lending identification. Includes a medical amnesty provision for persons who call 911 to report an alcohol-related health emergency.

Practical Notes
Violations by adults who furnish alcohol to minors can be charged as gross misdemeanors (340A.702) or felonies (340A.701) if the minor is intoxicated and suffers death or great bodily harm. The proof-of-age defense in subdivision 6 is important for licensees facing charges. The medical amnesty provision in subdivision 8 encourages underage persons to seek emergency help without fear of prosecution.
