§ 171.05 — Instruction Permit

Plain-Language Summary

An instruction permit (learner's permit) lets you practice driving with a licensed adult in the car. If you are 18 or older, you must hold the permit for at least 3 months (6 months if exactly 18) before getting a full license. If you are 15, 16, or 17, you must be enrolled in driver's education to get a permit.

Practical Notes
You must always carry the permit with you and have a licensed adult sitting next to you while driving. Teens under 18 who have been convicted of a DWI or crash-related offense cannot get a permit.
