§ 609.15 — Multiple Sentences

Plain-Language Summary

Governs when multiple prison sentences run at the same time or one after another. Courts must specify whether sentences are concurrent or consecutive. If not specified, sentences run concurrently. There are limits on how long consecutive misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor sentences can total.

Practical Notes
Consecutive misdemeanor sentences cannot exceed one year total. A gross misdemeanor plus misdemeanors cannot exceed two years. Multiple gross misdemeanors cannot exceed four years total. An inmate who assaults someone inside a correctional facility faces mandatory consecutive sentencing.
