§ 609.2232 — Consecutive Sentences for Assaults Committed by Inmates

Plain-Language Summary

Requires consecutive sentences for inmates who commit assault while in a correctional facility. The assault sentence runs after the current sentence, not at the same time. The inmate gets no credit for time already served on the earlier sentence.

Practical Notes
This applies to inmates in both state prisons and county jails. If a county jail inmate assaults a sheriff or deputy, the court cannot stay the sentence. The assault sentence must be served in the correctional facility even if the assault conviction is only a misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor.
