2025 Session Last amended: 1986 session

§ 609.3232 — Protective Order Authorized; Procedures; Penalties

Plain-Language Summary

Parents or guardians can ask a juvenile court for a protective order against someone who is inducing their minor child into prostitution or providing housing to help the child engage in prostitution. The court can order the person to return the child and stop all contact. Violating the order is contempt of court and may also be charged as a separate crime.

Practical Notes
This law gives parents a civil court tool to protect their children from sex traffickers and exploiters. The petition is filed in juvenile court and gets priority scheduling. The court must hold a hearing within 14 days. If the person fails to return the child as ordered, they can face additional criminal charges for depriving a parent of custodial rights.
