§ 609.376 — Definitions

Plain-Language Summary

This section defines terms used in Minnesota's child abuse and neglect criminal laws. A 'child' is anyone under 18. A 'caretaker' is anyone responsible for a child's care, whether through family ties or by taking on that responsibility. A 'complainant' is the alleged victim.

Practical Notes
These definitions apply to the false imprisonment, malicious punishment, and neglect or endangerment statutes. The broad definition of ‘caretaker’ means that babysitters, daycare workers, and other non-family members who care for children are covered by these laws.
