§ 609.891 — Unauthorized Computer Access

Plain-Language Summary

Unauthorized computer access means intentionally accessing a computer, computer system, or network without permission or beyond the scope of permission granted. Penalties range from misdemeanor to felony.

Practical Notes
This is Minnesota’s anti-hacking statute. It covers unauthorized access to any computer system, from personal computers to corporate networks. Even accessing a system you have some permission to use, but going beyond that permission, can be charged.
