§ 611.55 — Forensic Navigator Services

Plain-Language Summary

The Minnesota Competency Attainment Board must provide enough forensic navigator services for all defendants found incompetent in each judicial district. Forensic navigators help defendants with mental illness or cognitive impairments by creating bridge plans, coordinating treatment, assisting with court hearings, and connecting defendants to housing, medical care, and social services. They must remain neutral in legal matters. They can continue helping a person for up to 90 days after charges are dismissed.

Practical Notes
If you are found incompetent to stand trial, a forensic navigator will be assigned to help you. This person creates a plan for your housing and services, helps coordinate your treatment, and reports to the court on your progress. They are not on the prosecution’s or defense’s side. They can also help you for up to 90 days after your case ends to assist with stability in the community.
