§ 62L.02 — Definitions

Plain-Language Summary

This section defines key terms used throughout the Minnesota Small Employer Health Benefit Act. A 'small employer' is a business with 1 to 50 employees. An 'employee' must work at least 20 hours per week. Other definitions cover health carriers, health benefit plans, dependents, deductibles, waiting periods, and the Health Coverage Reinsurance Association.

Practical Notes
If you are trying to determine whether your business qualifies as a ‘small employer’ under this chapter, check whether you have between 1 and 50 current employees. Seasonal, temporary, and substitute workers do not count. The definition of ‘dependent’ includes spouses, children up to the limiting age, disabled children of any age, and grandchildren in certain cases.
