§ 65B.133 — Surcharge Disclosure

Plain-Language Summary

Auto insurance companies must give you a written disclosure explaining when and how they can increase your premium because of accidents or traffic violations (surcharges) before you buy a policy and whenever they change the plan. Surcharges cannot be applied for traffic violations unless you were convicted, and you cannot be surcharged for being a passenger in a bus or taxi accident.

Practical Notes
Before buying car insurance, you should receive a surcharge disclosure explaining how accidents or tickets could raise your rates, and your insurer must notify you of any changes to that plan.
