§ 97C.005 — Special Management Waters

Plain-Language Summary

This law allows the DNR commissioner to label certain lakes and streams as 'special management waters' with unique fishing rules. These are waters where experimental rules have been proven to work, or waters managed for specific purposes like trophy fishing, family fishing, or trout. The DNR must give public notice, hold meetings, and accept comments before making these designations.

Practical Notes
If you fish on special management waters, you must follow the unique rules for that body of water, which may include different size limits, bag limits, or seasons. The DNR can also make midseason changes to limits on certain waters like Upper Red Lake without going through the full rulemaking process. Always check current DNR regulations before fishing these waters.
