§ 148E.195 — Representations to Clients and Public

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires social workers to be honest with clients and the public about their license status and credentials. Social workers must display their license certificate at their place of practice and post client rights information. They must use the correct license designation (LSW, LGSW, LISW, or LICSW) in all professional communications. Misleading statements or using 'social worker' titles without a license is prohibited.

Practical Notes
Clients have a right to know that their social worker is licensed and to verify credentials with the board. A social worker who holds themselves out as having a higher credential than they possess—for example, using LICSW while only holding an LISW—violates this section. Employers must not present workers to the public as social workers if those workers are not licensed, with limited exceptions for county employees.
