§ 149A.50 — License to Operate a Funeral Establishment

Plain-Language Summary

Anyone who operates a place that holds, cares for, or prepares dead bodies for final disposition needs a license from the commissioner of health. The establishment must have a proper preparation room, office space, and comply with building codes. Licenses are valid for one year and cannot be transferred. A 50% or more change in ownership ends the license.

Practical Notes
Each funeral establishment location needs its own separate license. If the business is sold or there is a major change in ownership, a new license application is required. The license must be displayed where the public can see it.
