§ 169A.55 — License Revocation Termination; License Reinstatement

Plain-Language Summary

After a DWI-related license revocation period ends, the Commissioner of Public Safety will notify you of the steps required to get your license back. Reinstatement typically requires proof of completed alcohol treatment or counseling, payment of a reinstatement fee, and meeting any other conditions set by the commissioner.

Practical Notes
When this applies: After a DWI-related license revocation period expires. Who this affects: Anyone whose license was revoked for a DWI conviction or implied consent violation. Key points: You must complete all required steps before you can legally drive again, including any alcohol treatment or counseling that was ordered. Driving after revocation without proper reinstatement is a crime. If you were a juvenile when your license was revoked for a DWI-related offense, you must wait until age 18 and then complete a formal driving course, additional supervised driving, and a written exam before your license can be reinstated. The commissioner will also notify vehicle owners about plate impoundment procedures.
