§ 201.014 — Eligibility to Vote

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets out who can vote in Minnesota. To be eligible, a person must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a Minnesota resident for at least 20 days before the election. People convicted of felonies can vote when they are not incarcerated. Knowingly voting when ineligible is a felony.

Practical Notes
Under a 2023 law change, people with felony convictions regain their right to vote when they are not in prison, even if on probation or parole. People on work release are considered not incarcerated for voting purposes. Courts can also revoke voting rights for those under guardianship or found legally incompetent.
