2025 Session Last amended: 2025 session

§ 204B.45 — Mail Balloting

Plain-Language Summary

Small towns and townships with fewer registered voters may conduct elections entirely by mail instead of setting up a regular polling place. The governing body must pass a resolution to use mail balloting. Ballots are mailed to all registered voters, who fill them out and return them by mail or in person.

Practical Notes
Mail balloting is available for smaller communities and can save money by eliminating the need for a physical polling place. Voters still have the option to vote in person at the clerk’s office. This method is commonly used in rural Minnesota townships.
