§ 256.015 — Public Assistance Lien on Recipient's Cause of Action

Plain-Language Summary

Gives the state a lien (a legal claim) against any money a public assistance recipient recovers in a lawsuit or insurance claim, to the extent the state paid for their medical care or other benefits related to the same injury.

Practical Notes
If you receive public assistance for medical care after an injury, and you later get a settlement or judgment from the person who caused the injury, the state can claim part of that money to repay the benefits it provided.
