§ 259.241 — Adult Adoption

Plain-Language Summary

Allows any adult aged 18 or older to be adopted in Minnesota, requiring only the adult's own consent. Establishes that the adoption creates a full parent-child relationship including inheritance rights and terminates the legal relationship with birth parents.

Practical Notes
Adult adoption in Minnesota is simpler than child adoption. Only the adult being adopted needs to consent, and no home study or agency involvement is required. The adoption decree can include a name change if requested. This is commonly used by stepparents adopting adult stepchildren or to formalize long-standing family relationships.
