§ 259.52 — Fathers' Adoption Registry

Plain-Language Summary

Establishes Minnesota's Fathers' Adoption Registry, which allows a man who believes he may be the father of a child to register his interest within 30 days of the child's birth. Failure to register can result in loss of the right to notice of adoption proceedings and may constitute grounds for termination of parental rights.

Practical Notes
If you believe you may be the father of a child and the mother may place the child for adoption, you must register with the Minnesota Fathers’ Adoption Registry within 30 days of the child’s birth. Failure to register can result in losing your right to be notified of adoption proceedings and may be treated as abandonment. Not knowing about the pregnancy is not an acceptable excuse for failing to register.
