§ 508A.01 — Registration; Purpose; Definition

Plain-Language Summary

This law creates a simpler way to register land ownership in Minnesota called a Certificate of Possessory Title (CPT). If a county allows it, a landowner can register their property without going through the full court process. After five years, the CPT automatically becomes a regular certificate of title.

Practical Notes
If you own land in a county that has adopted this system, you can register your title more quickly and cheaply than through the standard Torrens registration process. This is especially useful for uncontested titles where no one disputes your ownership. After five years, your CPT converts to a full certificate of title.
