§ 609.2691 — Other Convictions Not Barred
Plain-Language Summary
A person can be convicted and punished for crimes against an unborn child and for any other crimes committed as part of the same conduct. The usual rule against being punished twice for the same act does not apply.
609.2691 OTHER CONVICTIONS NOT BARRED.
Notwithstanding section 609.04, a prosecution for or conviction under sections 609.2661 to 609.268 is not a bar to conviction of or punishment for any other crime committed by the defendant as part of the same conduct.

Practical Notes
This means a defendant who assaults a pregnant woman can face charges for both the assault on the woman and a separate charge for harm to her unborn child. Each offense can carry its own sentence. This is similar to the kidnapping double jeopardy exception in section 609.251.
