§ 626.557 — Reporting of Maltreatment of Vulnerable Adults

Plain-Language Summary

This law requires certain people — called mandated reporters — to report suspected abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of vulnerable adults. Vulnerable adults include people with physical or mental disabilities or people who depend on care facilities. Reports go to a common entry point and are then investigated.

Practical Notes
When this applies: When a mandated reporter has reason to believe a vulnerable adult is being or has been maltreated, or when a vulnerable adult has a physical injury that is not reasonably explained. Who this affects: Mandated reporters (including health care workers, social workers, law enforcement, educators, and facility staff), vulnerable adults, caregivers, and facilities that serve vulnerable adults. Anyone may also make a voluntary report. Key points: Mandated reporters must report immediately to the common entry point. Maltreatment includes abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation as defined in section 626.5572. Reports are investigated by a lead investigative agency (typically the county or the Department of Health). Reporters acting in good faith are immune from civil and criminal liability. Failure to report by a mandated reporter can result in penalties. The law includes detailed procedures for investigation, notification, appeal, and data handling.
