§ 148E.240 — Reporting Requirements

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires social workers to report certain information to the board, including criminal convictions, disciplinary actions by other licensing boards, and denials of licensure in other states—all within 90 days. Social workers must also comply with mandatory reporting laws for child maltreatment, vulnerable adult maltreatment, and duty-to-warn obligations. Social workers must report colleagues who may be violating professional standards or practicing without a required license.

Practical Notes
The 90-day self-reporting requirement for criminal matters is strictly enforced. Even a misdemeanor conviction may need to be reported if it is ‘reasonably related’ to social work practice. Failing to report a criminal conviction or license action in another state can itself become a disciplinary violation. The mandatory reporting duties for child and vulnerable adult maltreatment apply regardless of the source of the information or the clinical relationship.
