§ 403.11 — 911 System Cost Accounting Requirements; Fee

Plain-Language Summary

Every phone customer in Minnesota pays a monthly 911 fee of up to 95 cents per phone line to fund the 911 system. Phone companies collect this fee and send it to the state each month. The money goes into a special fund that can only be used for 911 services. Wireless companies must also report their subscriber numbers to the commissioner twice a year.

Practical Notes
You will see a 911 fee on your phone bill each month. This fee pays for the equipment, phone lines, and staffing that keep the 911 system working. Prepaid wireless customers pay a different fee under section 403.161 instead. The subscriber data that wireless companies report to the commissioner is treated as trade secret information.
