§ 142A.606 — Northstar Adoption Assistance Eligibility

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets eligibility rules for Northstar adoption assistance, which provides financial support and medical coverage for children with special needs who are adopted through the child welfare system. The child must have a documented disability, be part of a sibling group, or be at risk of developing a disability. Adoptive parents must pass a background study.

Practical Notes
Adoption assistance agreements can extend past age 18 up to 21 if the child is in school, working at least 80 hours per month, or has a disability. Relatives adopting a foster child and current foster parents do not need to go through the documented search requirement. If an adoptive parent dies, the child’s assistance can continue with a successor or through a subsequent adoption.
