§ 142G.40 — 60-month Time Limit; Exemptions

Plain-Language Summary

Adults can receive MFIP cash assistance for a maximum of 60 months (five years) in their lifetime. This limit counts any months of cash assistance from TANF programs in any state. Certain months are exempt from the count, including months when you followed a family violence safety plan.

Practical Notes
The 60-month clock counts months from any state, not just Minnesota. Time on Indian reservations with high unemployment may be excluded. Child-only cases and months when you had a family violence waiver do not count toward the limit. If you are approaching the limit, your county must notify you.
