§ 148E.0551 — Provisional Licenses

Plain-Language Summary

This section creates a provisional license for social workers who have met most licensing requirements but have not yet passed the required exam. A provisional license lasts up to three years and requires supervised practice with evaluations every six months. Once the exam is passed and all requirements are complete, the social worker can get a full license.

Practical Notes
A provisional license lets a new social work graduate work while finishing the licensing process. Provisional licensees must follow strict supervision requirements and cannot use standard license credentials like LSW or LGSW. If the supervisor’s evaluations show the provisional licensee cannot practice competently, the board can revoke the provisional license.
