§ 609.185 — Murder in the First Degree

Plain-Language Summary

Defines first-degree murder in Minnesota, the most serious homicide charge. Covers premeditated killings, deaths during certain felonies (sexual assault, burglary, robbery, kidnapping, arson, drug sales), killings of law enforcement or judges, and deaths caused by patterns of child abuse or domestic abuse. Conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Practical Notes
First-degree murder is the most severe criminal charge in Minnesota. A conviction means life imprisonment. If you or someone you know faces this charge, obtaining an experienced criminal defense attorney immediately is critical. A public defender will be appointed if you cannot afford an attorney. Do not speak to police without a lawyer present.
